We start with the bowl

The one Grandma made

Then we crack an egg

That our chicken laid...

Layer Cake is a poetic journey through each ingredient that goes into the making of a birthday cake. As the mother narrates the process to her child, she reveals the origins of each component, opening the child’s eyes to the interconnectedness of our world. Everything was once something else, and then we bring those things together to create something entirely new.

I designed this story to have a soothing cadence, perfect for naptime or bedtime, and to inspire a sense of wonder. In addition to being an ideal sleepy-time read, I also believe it has strong gifting potential for birthdays, baby showers, and Mother’s Day.
